Make January a little less cold and a lot more cozy.
In a couple of days, the joy of the new year will be upon us. We will usher in a bright beginning and saying goodbye to what was this last year. And with that comes taking down all the holiday decorations and packing them away until winter returns again. In some ways it feels good to make way for a clean slate, a fresh start. But it can also feel a bit melancholy as the warmth of the shiny bulbs, twinkling lights, bright decorations and the anticipation of gifts and merry making is over for now.
When I was a kid, I remember when we put all the decorations away, the house seemed so dark, cold and colorless. Given that I grew up in the Midwest, the snow and cold didn’t help matters much. My mom felt it too and decided how she could ease that transition from the holiday back to the regular routine. After she took down all the standard Christmas decor, she replaced it with her growing collection of snowmen. The red, green and gold of Christmas gave way to many shades of blue, white and silver. It made so much sense and such a difference. Now the dreary drag of post-holiday let-down was lessened by a wintery scene that still felt joyful and warm.
And that gave me an idea. I decided I would start decorating for the seasons and important holidays. It breathes fresh air into your home and gives you something to look forward to! Now, I am not suggesting you start a snowman collection, nor go out and buy an bunch of stuff for each holiday or season. It is very easy to add a few things in your home to honor whatever season is upon us and make it feel cozy and welcoming.
